Rain!

Friday, Jan 20…
Literally 100s of these in the valley.
Watched bits and pieces of the inauguration while we prepared to head out. Left just past noon: I-10 past the (huge!) windmill farm, then north on Hwy62 through Yucca Valley and NW on 247 to Barstow. It was shortly after we turned on to 247 that the rain really came down. We pulled off in front of the Western Coffee Pot Cafe, and Greg made grilled turkey-Havarti-lettuce-&-tomato sandwiches. (We eat well.)
Long, wet, dreary road ahead.

(The actual cafe was boarded up.)

Back on the road (and still in desert country), we go through several washes. We also note drainage ditches angling off the road every 100' or so. These folks have learned how to deal with random downpours. We're in the last stretch when the skies clear and we see just a bit of faint rainbow. It disappears after a bit, then a double rainbow appears - and being in such open country we can see the entire arch, colors bright as neon lights. Amazing.

Big wash, but not too deep.

We spend the night at Shady Lane Campground in Barstow. Very small, family-owned (nice folks), and a wonderful little laundry facility ($3.50 total for 2 loads, washed & dried. 😃)
Uneventful evening, though we hear quite a bit of wind in the middle of the night.
no wipers on the side.
Clean, clear windshield, but...

  1. When you say you go through several washes - do you mean areas on the road that are washed out - covered in water? Driving in the rain in something as big as the motor home would either be less scary - how could something that big even be washed away - or more scary, because if it was, it'd be a huge deal.
    Gorgeous rainbows!
