A Dam, a Lake, & a Canyon

 Tuesday, Oct 24…

This morning we drove down to Lower Antelope Canyon and purchased tickets for a walking tour. Noonish was the first available time, so we headed back toward page to check out Glen Canyon Dam.  I walked down to the lower observation deck for a closer look. We did not take the dam tour. (We toured Hoover and Big Bend earlier. I don’t have anxiety attacks, but I do get a bit queasy knowing I’m standing under umpteen million tons of water.)

Lower Antelope Canyon is beautiful. However, I must tell you that the photos are even more beautiful. Why? Because before we climb down, the tour guide has us adjust our camera settings to “accommodate the low light.” I took all my pictures on that setting, so I don’t know what the color would be if I hadn’t changed. Maybe there’d be less definition of color. Anyway, here’s a few shots. Oh… water has carved these beautiful curves. The guide told us that a flash flood can fill the canyon in a matter of minutes. People who don’t respond immediately to “Run!” have died.

Going down...

We're headed for that black hole on the left.

Gotta be (reasonably) skinny!

Climbing out.

Afterwards we enjoyed bottled water (not

BlogThoughts… For the last 20 years my Utah brother-in-law has talked about vacationing on a houseboat on Lake Powell. As his kids had families, he would take the whole family out for a week each summer. A few years back he suggested that just the grandparent generation (4-5 couples) should plan a similar getaway. It’s an expensive venture, and it hasn’t happened yet, but I did feel a bit more inclined when I really looked at the geography of Lake Powell (I don’t think there’s 20’ of straight shoreline anywhere) and realized how huge it is (and therefore how varied the landscape might be). On the other hand, the grandparents are also considering a week on Hawaii’s big island. And right now, Greg & I aren’t considering anything more than a weekend at Iron Springs (Copalis, WA) in February.
