Heading north on 89A |
Wednesday morning we sleep in a bit, then get organized for
travel. We’re taking the scenic route to Leeds (UT), where we’ll be staying
with extended family for nearly a week (long, hot showers & free laundry). We
head south on 89 for about 20 miles, then make almost a U-turn onto 89A and
drive north to cross the Colorado River in Marble Canyon. From there it’s
more-or-less westward across northern AZ, passing through the twin towns of
Colorado City and Hildale as we enter Utah. (Both towns are primarily FLDS
polygamous communities. Think Warren Jeffs.)

Finally, a pullout - and what a view. (Behind me, this canyon becomes much deeper.) |

Over and over again, we marvel at the vast scope of these vistas. |

The color is faded, but Greg says this pic delineates the landscape layers best. |
Thursday we headed toward St. George and turned off onto a dirt road to
find the trail to Yant Flat, a relatively unknown area often described as “one of Southern Utah's little gems.” The
early part of the 1-mile walk in was pretty sandy, but the path soon became packed
dirt. When we reached the flat itself the landscape changed dramatically. Here are a few shots…

After cleaning up, we drove into St. George for dinner at Anasazi
Steakhouse, where you cook your own steak on a 5” square rock – you could
almost hear it sizzle (and Greg got his rare, while my portion was medium). The
desserts were mighty tempting, but our next stop was a birthday party for a
neighbor’s 94-year old father. He was an absolute delight, and his son and Greg
bonded over engineering details. When we returned to Bob & Susan’s, another
brother- and sister-in-law had arrived from Salt Lake City. Tomorrow we’re all
off to Zion Nat’l Park.
BlogThought... This was really a fantastic day!
