Mesilla, NM

Tuesday, Feb 7…
This morning we walked a mile or so through the desert. The park has developed several trails and visitors are encouraged to dig (within reason) and take home whatever they find. We were happy just to walk and take a few pictures.
Soaptree Yucca
(more on this later)

Prickly pear and desert gravel.

Atrium at Double Eagle
Fellow RVers somewhere urged us to visit Mesilla, so we did. It was about 11:30, and we were practically the only people wandering around. (To be fair, we were in the “touristy” section of town and it’s a Tuesday in February.) Lots of silver/jewelry shops that looked too pricey for us, but then I found a great little gallery featuring local artists. I now have a smallish (12 x 20?), beautifully framed watercolor of the White Sands (which we would visit 2 days later and you can read about on the blog for Feb 7).

I like to support the local economy, so we also had lunch in Mesilla, choosing the Double Eagle b/c it was recommended for both its food and the lovely atrium. Wonderful venue. We both ordered from the appetizer menu: calamari fries w/ sweet chili for Greg, pulled BBQ beef soup (excellent!) for me, and some of the best onion rings ever to share. Since we’d eaten light, we split a chimichurri cheesecake for dessert. It was an innovative concoction (cheesecake sandwiched between 2 layers of very crunchy cinnamon toast) and well presented, but the cinnamon and sugar totally overpowered the cheesecake. I love cheesecake b/c it’s rich; this dish was all about sweet. No regrets, though, it was fun to try something new.
