Baton Rouge

Thursday, March 9…

We’re just outside of Baton Rouge in a very nice KOA Campground with a pool, hot tub, cheap laundry and a canine agility course. (Where’s Raven when we need her?) We drove into the city for lunch and a bit of history. By chance, we landed at the Capital City Grill, which was wonderful – especially the homemade cornbread baked w/ caramelized onions and topped with crawfish etouffée – outstanding!

Cornbread, exalted
to a new level.

Lots of dogs camp, but how often do they get this?

After lunch we toured the old capitol building, which is quite unusual in design. (Mark Twain called it a “little sham of a castle.") It was burned during the Civil War, not rebuilt for 20 years, and then used until 1932 when a new capitol “tower” (also very untraditional) was built. Today the old capitol serves as Museum of Political History (where I learned a lot about former Louisiana Governor Huey Long). Then we checked out the current capitol (looks boring, but we didn’t go in so I may be wrong), drove through Spanish Town and past the Hollywood Casino and came back to the campground. Nice little thunderstorm in the afternoon. Salmon for dinner. Good day.
Dome (added in 1882 rebuild)
Old State Capitol (like no other I've seen)

Art Deco Capitol Tower (1932)

BlogThoughts… The Mighty Mississippi is a paradox of sorts. As we drove from the old capitol to the new, we were maybe 100’ feet from its banks all along the way. But you’d never know it unless you can park and walk to the edge. Levees block the view but save the cities.

This is life-size and much more
impressive in person. One of the men
is playing an accordion.

Goodnight, Moon.
