Jackson & Beyond

Wednesday, March 15…

Old Capitol Building
Travel day, with a stop in Jackson for a little history and a great lunch. Visited the Old Capitol Bldg (I wonder how many states have built two b/c they outgrew the first), took a quick walk through the War Memorial Bldg, saw the Gov’s Mansion, and settled into a booth at the Mayflower Café (whose neon sign must date back to the restaurant’s opening in 1935). Greg had the fish tenders (pieces of red snapper throat – kinda like halibut cheeks on a bone) and fried green tomatoes. Every southern restaurant has bread pudding on the dessert menu, but we’re usually too full to try it.
"Official" photo of War Memorial Entrance
These were cool - over 10' high
and "in-your-face" silver!

Fashioned after the Tomb of the
Unknowns in Arlington Nat'l Cemetery
"Time will not dim the glory of their deeds"

(Flag fully furled - we've seen
that a lot across the south.)

Sidewalks in sad shape...

Work underway (yeh, I know it's
a road, not a sidewalk, but you
get my point - and look at all
that copper tubing)

Beautiful sidewalk.

Another milestone in civil rights history.

Looked dumpy, but it had inner
character and good food!

BlogThoughts...The state park we're in is gorgeous. Large sites, lots of trees (not as much sunshine as we'd like, but that's Mother Nature). Coming in we drove on top of a very low dam (see below). We're about 2' below lake-level, and water is seeping below the boards. The left edge of the road becomes a spillway. Cool!
A bit of a surprise yesterday.

No more live oaks - this
 is longleaf pine country.
