Ahh.. the Amish.

Friday, May 19
Fun travel day. Still heading east, and now in serious Amish country. Lovely farmscapes! Our route bypasses Lancaster, but we take a slight detour south onto Old Philadelphia Pike through Smoketown (lunch at the Good & Plenty Restaurant), Bird-in-Hand (great farmer’s market!), and Intercourse (ever hopeful). We tried some authentic shoofly pie, but didn’t fall in love with it (even w/ a generous dollop of whipped cream). The strawberries at the farmer’s market, however, are actually red all the way through – what a concept.

(We saw this one later, but
I think it fits this series.)
We left w/ quite a bit in hand.
So named b/c it was a
social gathering place.

Buggy horses trot briskly along the edge of the road, completely unfazed by other traffic, and the Amish women all have flawless complexions. We saw beautifully maintained fields and truck gardens, 3-, 4- and 5-mule plows turning the soil, and lots of laundry blowing in the breeze. (And Greg spotted a young Amish boy driving a horse from a wheeled platform with gas-powered mower blades underneath.)

Nice state campground. However...  our site was described as having "slight elevation," but the closest the jacks could get to level put our front wheels 8" off the ground (and we still were 3" off). The campground is booked solid for the weekend, so we're moving to Hidden Acres tomorrow.
