Long Day, Relaxing Night

Friday, May 12…

Up early for 7:15 workers meeting. Then Greg’s off to Turn 1 and I’m on my way to the Race Control room.  It’s got a great view, but that view comes with responsibility. “Don’t worry,” Greg assures me, “all you have to do is record the conversations between Control and the various stations.” And, today at least, that was very do-able 90% of the time. Only 3 different race groups, the largest was maybe 17 cars (Greg used to run in a group of 40-50), and there were no significant incidents. Truly, the hardest thing for me was sitting still for such a long stretch. I’d been driven to the site, I was reluctant to leave the room between sessions in case I’d miss some bit of important info, and the room was warm and unventilated. By lunch my body was screaming WALK!  But, of course, I was driven to the lunch site.

Quite the track... the control room is about where the flagpole hits
the surface. The official START is at the back of the track where there's

enough space to the drivers to collect themselves in proper order.

The afternoon was pretty much the same, so I was feeling pretty good about my responsibility. By the time we quit, though, I was physically and mentally exhausted. (Like ready to go to bed exhausted!) Instead, we joined the other workers for burgers and Costco cookies (nothing like the meals Greg & I used to fix for his race group). Back at the MH, we decided to curl up with a movie (The Mexican, 2001 - Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts in a romcom/road trip/shoot-em-up adventure). Amazingly, we both stayed awake through the whole thing, and I actually had more energy at the end than before.

Steak for dinner last night.
No place for the grill?
No problem.
...a beautiful day in the neighborhood.
