Rough Road Ahead

Wednesday, May 3…
VA Rte 603: This isn't the section we drove,
but the condition is very similar.
A couple hours west, several lovely small towns with a common theme lie nestled deep in the Allegheny Highlands. We drive through Warm Springs (and West Warm Springs) on our way to Bolar Mt. Camp-ground. Hot Springs and Healing Springs aren’t far away. Unfortunately, Garmi (our GPS demon) has determined the quickest route is via 8 MILES of a barely 2-lane, sometimes paved/sometimes gravel road lined (and overhung) with untrimmed trees. I knew the main entrance was off the highway, and my biggest fear was that this might be a service road that was gated at the campground and we’d have to find some way to turn around… and it would NOT be pleasant. I was very glad to be wrong!

Lake Moomaw
Another great campground on a lake. Very few folks here. Very quiet. In the afternoon we walked down to the water and circled back, passing through all of our site loop and chatting briefly w/ anyone we found. After dinner, we built a fire and played rummy (I lost) until we couldn’t read the cards even w/ extra light. A gibbous moon was almost directly overhead, and we suddenly realized that the woods were filled with moon shadows (yes, Cat Stevens’ voice ran through my head 😊). Beautiful night.
Canopy as we walked back to the MH.

BlogThought... We're a long way from the Rockies, but we have done some long climbs, and the MH has proven both reliable and durable. As we were traveling yesterday, Greg glanced at the engine load monitor, which read 102%. Of course that's not quite possible, but it was giving all it could and not showing any sign of strain. We have an excellent steed.

One of many climbs through the Allegheny Mts.
