Rain, and other Water Issues

Friday, May 5…

Another long drive…  out of Virginia in just a few miles, then a long trek across West Virginia (crossing the New River Gorge and skirting both Charleston & Huntington), and finally another 60 miles or so into Kentucky to the Daniel Boone National Forest. All beautiful country, with one striking exception. As we left Huntington and crossed the Big Sandy River, our first view of Kentucky was the 650-acre Marathon Oil Refinery. It really was somewhat of a shock after all those miles of rolling green hills – which reappeared shortly. We’re in Twin Knobs Campground, which also borders an immense lake (and there must be a dam close by – those TVA guys built a lot of dams!)

... and immediately see THIS!

Entering, I read this...

I'll let the pictures below tell the whole saga of today's weather as we traveled.

The photo is terrible, but note the high,
churning, muddy water - the
aftermath of last night's downpour.

Still a few drops on the windshield, but we are in
full sunshine (and in West Virginia)

"Coal?" asks Greg.

Nearing our destination.

A tiny, tiny section of Cave Run Lake.

BlogThought... Never assume anything. We still have lots of dirty clothes, so I am happy to learn that this campground has a laundry center. I head down there in between rain showers and am even happier to find 3 washers, 3 dryers and no one else in sight. I have 3 loads - the equation is balanced. Oh, wait... I'm short on quarters. But I can get change at the camp store (other side of the washer wall). Except it closed early today. I have enough for 2 washes and one dry, but that would leave me with a basket of damp clothes. So one load it is. Soap in, clothes added, quarters inserted, remaining laundry returned to car. After the machine fills I check the water level (mostly a matter of curiosity). It's fine. I read. After the rinse cycle starts, I lift the lid to see how much soap residue there is. (I use as little soap as possible, but I still often find suds in the rinse water.) Not this time. Good! Also, however, almost no water - NOT good. Five bath towels and a whole bunch of socks crammed in maybe 10" of water and barely moving. There's a number to call to report problems, but that's not going to get this load done properly.  Tomorrow we're going into town for the other loads.
