Alabama, Briefly

Monday, March 27…
Long drive, lots of water. We’re kind of paralleling the southern coast, so we cross estuaries, bayous, rivers, marshes, creeks… whatever.  Frequently there’s very shallow water immediately around us, but if we look farther to our right there’s the vast expanse of the Gulf of Mexico. That was especially true as we drove through Mobile, AL. Two major rivers converge north of the city and then flow south into Mobile Bay.

Approaching Mobile
We're on I-10... under the river,
then across miles of bays.
Under the Alabama River

Crossing the bay: grasses and an occasional tree growing
near the bridges, open water to the southern horizon.
Stops at Costco to stock up on vitamins (and grab a cheap lunch) and Piggly Wiggly (which really was a great little store in a tiny town). We’re camped beside Camel Lake, which must be very close to the time zone line b/c both our phones keep slipping back and forward. Beautiful park – I wish we didn’t have to leave early again in the morning. AC is off, and we can hear all the crickets or whatever chirping. It’s great (and very, very dark).
