Down Time

Saturday, June 10 - Thursday, June 15
Short, uneventful drive back to Lynn’s. Disappointed not to see framing up for her house—apparently the contractor’s waiting on installation of a pole to bring electricity to the site. Saturdays are busy at the kennel, and we had odd jobs to take care of, so we really didn’t get together until dinner. Which was followed by a couple of Scrabble games, Greg joining us for one of them.  He’s getting better.
NOTE: I’m typing this on Tuesday, June 13, and I realize I haven’t taken any pics since we left NYC. Blog pages need pics, so I may toss in some from earlier adventures.

Short drive to the church house on Sunday. The chapel is a mini version of our stake center – even the upholstery on the pews is the same. Total déjà vu. Laundry and Scrabble games w/ Lynn in the afternoon while Greg is changing oil in the MH. Lynn provides tasty ribs for dinner, and afterwards the 3 of us strategize the best use of X, Q, J & Z.

 Chrysler Bldg (NY) - gorgeous!

Though I'm always grabbing my fleece when the AC is on, one of the compressors is currently on the fritz, so Greg spends a good part of Monday morning trouble shooting. No definitive plan yet. I’m now deep into Bonfire of the Vanities (Tom Wolfe) and finding it raw (these are not people I could possibly like),but compelling. And boy, can this man ever write!!
We booked our campsite in Cape Breton, but still have several more to lock in. More Scrabble, of course - Greg didn’t win, but he did manage 68 pts in one turn, which is impressive! He also scrambled up a great hash w/ leftover pork loin, some pork sausage, and a medley of colorful veggies. What a luxury to have a personal chef.

More vehicle maintenance Tuesday. Greg replaced the emergency brakes (both rear wheels) and ordered AC compressor parts to run some diagnostic testing. Lynn and I went shopping this morning (she’s got a short Bermuda cruise coming up), and Greg & I secured some more campground reservations tonight. The Nova Scotia loop trip will take almost 3 weeks.

Do you see a word here?
Wednesday Lynn & I finished up bits and pieces of yard work around the kennel. (She's got a lawn guy, but there were several summer plants that still need planting/transplanting.) Lynn's ex is planning on buying a MH next year when he retires, so he came over to chat w/ Greg while Lynn & I battled Welsh racks (all consonants) against Old McDonald ones.

Lots of shortcakes!
Thursday... Haircuts for all of us, Scrabble and laundry (at Lynn's while we play), Greg zeroing in on the AC problem and deciding we can live w/ the status quo until we come back here in mid-July. Yay!  This evening we stopped by the Dudley (MA) annual Strawberry Festival and brought home strawberry shortcakes (w/ real whipped cream) to enjoy w/ Lynn later this evening.
Local electric company putting the new (thicker, taller, bigger, better) pole on Lynn's property tomorrow and we're in the way, so we'll be off early. It's been wonderful to have these few quiet days. (Well, maybe not literally quiet - we are camped at a busy dog kennel.)

The Old Fiddlers of Rhode Island entertain.
(We missed the frog jumping contest, but I heard that participants were
asked to be sure return their entries to wherever they'd found them.
😃)
BlogThought…  We all know some of the most nondescript eateries are the best. And there just aren’t any better pancakes than the ones at Carl’s Diner (Oxford, MA). Thick, light, golden brown, almost crispy on top, and delicious! I can only eat half an order, but I savor every mouthful (especially w/ the super crisp – but never overcooked – bacon). The other thing Carl’s is famous for is portion size. Greg ordered one scrambled egg ($2.55, incl potatoes & toast) and a side of kielbasa.

Greg ate 1/4, brought the rest home, and enjoyed it for 2 days.
