Odds & Ends

Friday, June 23

Kind of a disjointed day. Our first plan was to take a day trip to Flower Pot Rocks, one of the viewing spots for high/low tides on the Bay of Fundy. Then we realized the tide times were way out of line w/ our  schedule, so we took the little ferry over to Brundage Point where there’s a farmer’s market every Friday. Good thing It’s a free ferry & only a 5-minute ride cuz the market doesn’t open ‘til 2pm. Back to the campground where someone suggested we drive around Kingston Peninsula, check out the lighthouse, covered bridge, etc. So we did.  Nice, but nothing memorable. Eventually we took a different 5-minute ferry over to Saint John, a small city with a “famous” City Market. After a couple wrong turns (no address, no GPS) and a walk through the downtown mall, we reached this mecca... and found the usual artsy craftsy stuff plus local eateries. I had a good bowl of curried pumpkin apple soup, and Greg enjoyed fried clams and chips. Greg was also hoping for fresh produce, and we did buy some really good looking strawberries that, unfortunately, had very little flavor.

On our way out of Saint John we stopped at the local viewing spot for "the reversing falls," another aspect of the tidal phenomenon. The St. John River (flowing to the Atlantic)  has a several foot drop at one point within the city. As the a tide rushes in from the Bay of Fundy (highest tides on Earth), it literally forces the river back up the falls. That would be awesome to watch, but - again - the timing is all wrong.
A few minutes after this we’re back at Brundage Point, where the little farmer's market is now open. No veggies, but a great looking lemon pie and (at the bread table where Greg is drooling) homemade cheese rolls (Parker House type, infused with melted cheese). Both were yummy! (And both lasted 3 days. Amazing.)  We also chatted with a gentleman who makes primitive electric “guitars” from cigar boxes and other unusual items. They can be played, but you’ve got to be pretty smart to make ‘em sound like much.

ARTISAN GUITARS.
Note one made of driftwood (on table) and the upright shovel guitar.
(All are playable - making them sound good is another matter.)

BlogThought...  Good day overall. But it was chilly, gray and drizzly (sometimes pour-y). At times I know I would have been happier playing Scrabble in the MH. But overall it was better to be out and about
