The canal is that short red line at the top of the lower-left triangle. |
Lynn’s up before 6 to take a friend
to her chemo treatment in Boston. By 10, we’re on our way to Cape Cod (so
trivial in comparison) in pouring rain. Fortunately it’s not too long a drive. I was kind of surprised when we crossed the Bourne Bridge… is the Cape an island, I wondered. That didn’t seem right.
Martha’s Vineyard, yes. Nantucket, yes. But Cape Cod??? Later I learned that we had crossed a canal
(built in 1909 but first proposed by Miles Standish back in 1623!). Basically,
the canal was created by widening, deepening, and joining 2 existing rivers. It’s
part of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and shaves 135 miles off a trip around. There’s also a bike path and
other recreational areas on each side.

BlogThought... We're staying at Dunroamin' Campground, chosen in part b/c I loved (and chuckled over) the name. A little research tonight confirms that the word is, in fact, Scottish in origin and is quite a popular name for homes in the UK. I could take a pic of the campground's entry sign, but this house plaque (available for £11.99 ) is much more attractive.
P.S. As soon as we got our hook-ups in place, we just hunkered down inside. I did take one walk through the sites just before dark, when the rain had finally let up. This park is only open from mid-April to mid-Oct and is mostly for seasonal residents who have trailers parked here permanently. It's well maintained, though, and there's a cheap laundry. We're content.
